Garden Edges: Keeping Your Plants in Line

Whether you have plants, mulch, gravel or grass in your landscaping plans, it’s necessary to keep these all in their place. The easiest and most effective way to manage this is to add some edging that will help keep everything where it belongs.

Naturally, you will want your edging to blend seamlessly into the background. You will also want it to be durable and long-lasting so that you don’t have to worry about maintaining it over the years.

That is why it is always best to go with some sort of steel, brick, stone, or concrete borders as they require virtually no maintenance and will last for as long as you own your home.

Keep in mind: the more permanent the edging, the harder it is to change your landscape design in the future. Also, provide a path for the water in your landscape design as it needs a path to get under or around permanent edging.

If you don’t want a permanent border, it is best to dig a small trench with a shovel or spade, then allow your mulch, gravel, or soil to gradually fill in the hole. By adding edging and keeping your landscaping trimmed and neat, you will not only be increasing your home’s curb appeal, but you will also be increasing its value.

Make Soaker Hoses Part of Your Irrigation System

In the world of irrigation system design, soaker hoses are among the easiest and most efficient systems you can install. The slow dripping of the hose means there is no runoff, which is something you will appreciate when the water bill arrives.

Installing a soaker hose doesn’t take long at all. You simply lay the hose out in the pattern you need, then stake it into the ground along your prescribed path. You can cover it with mulch to keep it out of sight and to help reduce the loss from evaporation.

When you are ready to water, connect the hose to your faucet and let the water flow gently into your flower bed or garden. At the end of the growing season, all you have to do is unstake the hose, roll it up, and store it in the garage until spring. As long as you maintain your hose, it will last for many, many growing seasons.

As a note of caution, keep an eye on the soil and plants around soaker hoses. Occasionally animals or kids can run over a hose, or even something in the water itself can clog an area of a hose. Those dry areas can make plants struggle in a hurry, but as long as you monitor the soil on occasion, there’s no better way to get water to plants than directly to the roots.
