Amanda White, Landscape Design
Can you tell us about a current landscape trend? Naturalized Modern, where we are using more native materials (ie grasses, perennials, natural form shrubs) in a modern rhythmic planting form.
What is your favorite tree or shrub and why? Clump Serviceberry Tree because it has something of interest each season. It is a clump tree that is reminiscent of Birch and Aspen and goes well in any type of landscape, has a white flower in spring, orange berries that birds love in the summer, and a gorgeous russet color for fall.
What are some underused plants in landscape? Crapemrytle and Weigela are taking over the place of roses in many gardens. The bloom is beautiful and both have interesting foliage to add interest as well.
Common mistakes in homeowner backyard design? Not understanding the scale of the site. That tends to lead them to overplanting and misjudging the finished size of plants.
Don’t forget to: WATER! Even in winter!
