Al Shores, Manager, Irrigation Department
What is something your customers don’t do often enough regarding their irrigation system?
They don’t adjust their zone run times often enough. The frequency should be every 10-14 days on a regular basis to adjust to current weather conditions.
What is a common mistake you see in irrigation?
Watering too much too early in the growing season. Heavy watering in April and May results in weaker root development which leads to the need for even more watering in the hot summer.
What new technology is being used in irrigation systems?
Everyone should be using rain sensors. They are inexpensive for what they can save you in water, efficiency, plant health and money. They shut off your system when heavy rain has already watered. It prevents over-watering or water waste
Are irrigation systems wasteful?
Just the opposite. You get a precisely timed watering per plant zone at the right time of day. Watering from a garden hose or sprinkler that is hooked up can use a lot more water since it’s easy to forget to turn it off. Also, people tend to water in the evening when using a hose, and it is best to water in the morning hours.
What is your favorite style of landscape design?
Native and natural, not groomed or formal.
