Acidic soil is a problem in the Kansas City area that many homeowners struggle with throughout the year.

Fortunately, there are some garden soil tips that will make it a little easier to keep your plants healthy and growing strong.
If your soil has a pH lower than six, it’s acidic. If it has a pH over seven, it’s alkaline. The trick to balancing isn’t necessarily keeping it in the middle of these two ranges but rather making sure that the plants you install are right for the soil you have on your property.
While you can add soil acid neutralizers to your soil, this is a lot of work, and it’s not a permanent solution. Thus, it is best to simply accept your acidic soil as it is and select plants that thrive within an acidic environment.
To help make this easier for our customers, our plant care guide is full of species that love acidic soil and look fabulous throughout their growing seasons. Our suggestions include the following:
- Conifers and Pines – These provide lots of cover, but you’ll want to be careful not to plant too many as they can increase the already existing acidity levels.
- Rhododendrons – These look beautiful within a formal garden and provide a nice complement to conifers, pines, and other large foliage.
- Blueberry, Huckleberry, and Cranberry – The colors of these vibrant plants is the first clue these plants love acidic soil. They look magnificent, and the splashes of color they emit indicate they have a sweet treat in store for you.
