One of the primary reasons folks have taken up gardening again is because of concerns with the safety and quality of our food supply.
To that end, here are some tips from our garden center in Kansas City that will help you start your own organic garden.
- Prepare the soil. Make sure it is nutrient rich and has the proper pH balance.
- Start your compost now. If you do it properly, leaves, grass clippings, and other material that you put in your compost pile will decompose over the winter and provide nutrient rich material for your spring planting.
- Choose your plants carefully. Choose plants that are suited for our climate, and plant them strategically within your garden. Remember: certain plants like Spearmint, Petunia’s, and Garlic are natural insect repellents.
- Visit a farmers’ market this fall. There are many in the area, and the farmers will be happy to share their own secret tips and gardening suggestions.
